About the Society

We are a student-led initiative with the aim of spreading awareness and knowledge about financial literacy and consumer awareness.
It's a society that gives a voice to students' opinions on consumer finance, current affairs, public policy and more. The society aims to involve college students more in financial matters with the aim of turning them into responsible people in an increasingly globalized economy.
We embrace the value of inclusiveness with the aim of reaching to more people and stimulating intellectual curiosity. We organize thought-provoking events that encourage participation and analysis of a wide range of issues.

Past Events

Industrial exposure offers a great source to gain practical knowledge. Students can observe and learn as to how theoretical concepts are put into action, thereby aiding their practical learning. SOFICA organized a session with executives from RBI to expose the students to a real working environment and show how things are done in an organization. It also organized a visit to SEBI where the students imparted knowledge about the functioning, policy changes, FIDD i.e., The Financial Inclusion and Development Department and demonetization. The members also sought information about the alternative investment funds available and came to know about SCORES - SEBI Complaints Redress System where a person can register complaints online. SOFICA conducted workshops on mutual funds with the view to inculcate and impart financial knowledge among the learners. The speakers talked about the power of compounding and how mutual funds can multiply and act as a pathway to create wealth. Later an advanced level of the same was organized by the society. Team SOFICA came with an opportunity for the students, teachers and non-teaching staff members of the college to apply for PAN card in the college itself. The society was able to accomplish its goals to educate, encourage and initiate something of value to the people.

When entertainment and education go hand in hand, students benefit a great deal. Organizing creative sessions and events not only introduces them to social interactions among peers but also paves the way for the development of healthy competition. SOFICA in collaboration with Udyamita organized its first ever academic fest Tvesh'18- Where dreamers meet doers. It consisted of 5 major events namely,  Judged: a moot room activity that introduced the students to the world of law and legal proceedings of a consumer court, Entrepreneurial Bazaar: an event that encouraged budding students entrepreneurs to bring their ideas into life and present it to the crowd, Finquest: an event in which participants were judged on their in-depth understanding of financial terms through fun and games, Ruminate: a student panel discussion which provided a platform to all those who can effectively articulate their points, Finders and Keepers: a treasure hunt. The second recension of the Annual Academic Festival of the college, Tvesh, was highly acclaimed. Tvesh 2.0 consisted of 4 major events. Entrepreneurial Bazaar: an avenue for budding startups to put up a stall in the college and sell their ideas to a crowd of more than 1500 students, Seek the Unseek'n: a treasure hunt with financial twists and turns, StartupMania: a battle between startup owner and enthusiast, KLOL Khalsa Laugh Out Loud: a stand-up competition judged by Mr. Parvinder Singh and Mr. Jaspreet Singh.

2020 was a gloomy year for all of us. When economies around the world went under strict lockdown owing to the global pandemic, SOFICA moved to online platforms, using progressive ideas to impart financial literacy and awareness amongst the masses. SOFICA conducted an awe-inspiring panel discussion under the theme “Role of women in the post COVID economy”. The panel which had the most exemplary speakers: Ms. Sadhika Tiwari (Principal correspondent Indiaspend, India), Ms. Neha Gupta (Director M&A, Deloitte, India), Ms. Anpayani Gupta Kabra (Stockbroker, India) and Mrs. Arpita Mukherjee (Professor ICRIER, India) touched upon various topics such as the role of women in informal sectors, gender-responsive economy. SOFICA conducted a virtual fest Ikhtiyaar’21- knowledge reveals power for the first time in its history with the motive to further promote its vision of a financially responsible and aware student community. It consisted of 4 major events- Crypto Strike: An event that explored various aspects of blockchain and cryptocurrency trading, Gully Cred: An online rap event that provided a platform to all the budding rappers to showcase their rap skills with a punch of finance elements, Kuch Bhi Chalega (K.B.C): An event that allowed the participants to be all creative and use any medium (dance, music, art, poetry) to present their views on the given topic, Inversio 2.0: An online gaming event for all the finance enthusiasts out there. Project Aarthik Gyaan is an initiative launched under SOFICA with the aim to help indigent people to improve their lives and escape poverty by providing them with access to appropriate financial services and life-changing information.

The project was carried out in two parts-

Online: Volunteers from all across the country were called for a 14-day volunteering program. Under which they were required to survey and provide access to relevant information to a minimum of two indigent people in their vicinity.

Offline: The members of SOFICA were given an opportunity for one-on-one interaction with the non-teaching staff of the college. They conducted surveys and assisted them by providing relevant information regarding various low-risk investment options.

In future, SOFICA plans to expand the project to different Delhi University affiliated colleges by recruiting campus ambassadors. Also, it has planned to take the project out of the college premises by visiting various slums around the college area and explain the insurance and financial policies to the concerned people according to their needs.
